One of the outstanding air quality modeling problems is the dispersion of pollutant releases in building wakes. In this paper, a simple analytical dispersion model is described for building wakes that accounts for sources with exhaust momentum and buoyancy. The model incorporates knowledge of the mean flow and turbulence within takes into a description of dispersion. For short downwind distances, a probability density function (p.d.f.) approach is adopted in which particles are followed from the source to downwind locations given the p.d.f.s of the lateral and vertical velocity fluctuations. The model includes the variation of flow properties with downwind distance and a mean negative vertical velocity in the wake to account for the mean streamline descent. For large distances, an eddy-diffusion approach is used. The new model has been tested with the wind tunnel-data of Huber et al. and found to give reasonable agreement with concentration measurements.
