Portions of the Northeast US Ozone Transport Region (OTR) periodically experience conditions that are conducive for the accumulation of organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, and their photochemical reaction products (such as ozone, i.e., photochemical smog) in the boundary layer and lower troposphere. During the summer, meteorological conditions occur that favor the accumulation of ozone concentrations that can exceeds Federal air quality standards. To improve their understanding of the meteorological processes associated with such episodes, upper-air meteorological observations and surface air quality and meteorological data were collected during the summer of 1994. These measurements supplemented data provided by existing meteorological and air quality networks. The data have been used to examine meteorological phenomena associated with periods of elevated ozone concentrations, and synoptic and mesoscale processes at the surface and aloft that could influence the transport of ozone and its precursors.
