The absorption maxima in the spectra of NiCl/sub 2/ in molten LiCl/KCl are discussed from the point of view of the ligand field theory. It is concluded that the nickel ion is surrounded by four chloride ions in a nearly tetrahedral arrangement. Variations in the intensity of one of the bands give a sensitive indication of the degree of distortion of this structure. (auth)
