RADIATION INDUCED REACTIONS OF ISOPROPYL ETHER IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION (in Russian)
The action of x rays on isopropyl ether in aqueous solution was studied in the presence of different gases. In an N/sub 2/-saturated solution the products observed were acetone and alcohol; in the presence of O/sub 2/, hydrogen peroxide was also formed. In the presence of H/sub 2/, only acetone could be detected, the yield being the lowest in the presence of oxygen. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that the reactivity of the HO/sub 2/ radical towards the isopropyl ether molecule is less than that of H and OH. The absence of alcohol in the H/sub 2/-saturated solutions shows that the reaction H/sub 2/ + OH yields H/sub 2/O + H proceeds with relatively high velocity. In the presence of oxygen, hydrogen peroxide is first formed and then decomposes with the production of additional acetone. The decomposition is due to reaction with H and C/sub 3/H/sub 7/ radicals.
