PROGRESS REPORT ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PROCEDURES FOR ULTRASONIC WELDING SIMILAR AND DISSIMILAR HEAT-RESISTING ALLOYS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4227854
S>An experimental plan has been drawn up to study the fundamentals of the ultrasonic-welding process and to determine the suitability of the process for joining material combinations tha cannot be welded by conventional techniques. The ultrasonic-welding unit has been modified and reissembled. A new anvil has been designed and made and three new welding tips have been made. Work was started on measuring ultrasonic forces by attaching strain gages to the section between the welding tip and transducer. Studies were started on the effect of material variables on ultrasonic welding. The variables being investigated are: the effect of cold work, grain size, and yield strength on ultrasonic welding. The results of this part of the program are not yet available. (auth)
