Title: MEGATRON ACCELERATOR PROGRESS REPORT

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4226249

The Megatron (mega-gauss betatron) is designed to create a 1000 ampere beam of 150 Mev electrons. A low inductance 10/sup 5/ joule capacitor bank is changed to 50 kv, then discharged into the field coil, which surrounds a plasmafilled torus. The charged particles are accelerated to peak energy in 6 mu sec. A general description of the machine is given and energetics of induction acceleration, field shaping, plasma injection, capacitor bank and switches, the field coil, collision and radiation losses, and diagmostics are discussed.
