TITRIMETRIC DETERMINATION OF ZIRCONIUM

Description of 2 new methods of determining Zr in minerals are presented. Zr is precipitated from hydrochlonic acid solution with mandelic acid (I) or with p-bromomandelic acid (II), the precipitate is dissolved in a saturated solution of Na/sub 2/C0sub 3/, I (or II) is oxidized with KMnO/sub 4/, to benzoic (or p- bromobenzoic) acid and the excess KMnO/sub 4/ is determined in the usual manner with H/sub 2/C/sub 2/O/sub 4/. From 2 to 50 mg Zr are determined with an error of plus or minus 1%. The second method is suitable for determination of less than 2 mg Zr. Na/sub 2/Cr/sub 2/O/sub 7/ is used as oxidizing agent in concentrated H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. Excess of oxidizing agent is determined by titration with a solution of FeSO/sub 4/ in the presence of ferroin as indicator. 1 to 5 mg Zr are determined with an error from 1 to -2%; less than 1 mg Zr---with an error of --2 to --5%.
