PRECISION MEASUREMENT OF THE Be$sup 9$$($$gamma$,n) CROSS SECTION

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
Measurements have been made of the photoneutron cross section for Be/sup 9/ using gamma rays from radioactive sources of Y/sup 88/ (l.85 Mev) and Sb/sup 124/ (1.69 Mev). The values obtained at these two energies are (6.54 plus or minus 0.31) x 10/sup -28/ cm/sup 2/ and (12.62 plus or minus 0.69) x 10/sup - 28/ cm/.sup 2/, respectiv ely. The limiting factors in the accuracy of these measurements are the uncertainties in the gamma -ray source strength calibration and in the NBS No. 2 Ra- gamma -Be neutron source standard, and the lack of precise knowledge concerning the Sb/sup 124/ decay scheme. A new measurement of the gamma -ray branching ratios in the Sb/sup 124/ decay has also been made. (auth)
