The two-dimensional flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid past a cylinder in a uniform magnetic field was analyzed using Stokes approximation. Detailed calculation is carried out for the flow past a circular cylinder in two cases; one in a parallel magnetic field, and the other in a transverse magnetic field. The expansion formulas for the drag per unit span of the cylinder are obtained in terms of the Hartmann number in each case.
