OSCILLATIONS OF A FINITE COLD PLASMA IN A STRONG MAGNETIC FIELD

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4219750
Most treatments of plasma oscillations have been given for plasmas of infinite extent. Such treatments give information on the propagation of electromagnetic waves inside a plasma, but give no indication of the coupling between these waves and the electromagnetic fields outside the plasma. This coupling determines the radiation from, say plasma oscillations, as well as the response of the plasma to externally applied fields, where the fields may be either wave fields or near fields produced by currents and charges near the plasma surface. Since the electromagnetic field affords one of the most fruitful means for investigating the behavior of plasmas, it is important to know the size and effects of this coupling. (auth)
