MEASUREMENT OF PHOTONUCLEAR ABSORPTION CROSS SECTIONS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instr. and Methods
The total photonuclear cross sections for carbon, aluminum, sulfur, and iron was measured in the energy region of the giant resonance. A total absorption scintillation spectrometer was used to study the transmission of the bremsstrahlung spectrum from a 30 Mev synchrotron through long absorbers. The integrated total photonuclear cross section between 10 and 27 Mev as well as the width of the giant resonance was obtained. The measured widths are definitely larger for the deformed nuclei aluminum and iron than for the spherical carbon nucleus, whereas the width for sulfur has an intermediate value. (auth)
