MECHANISM OF THE PLUTONIUM NITRATE EXTRACTION BY MONO- AND DIBUTYL PHOSPHATES (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Atomnaya Energ.
OSTI ID:4215090
The irradiation of Th/sup 232/ in a reactor gives rise to the formation of U/sup 233/, Pa/sup 233/, and fission products. In order to utilize the untransformed Th/su as a fertlle material and U/sup 233/ as a fissionable material, it is necessary to eliminate foreign elements capable of absorbing neutrons and gamma emitters which complicate their handling. The most favorable experimental conditions for the chemical treatment are defined. The process includes the solution of metallic thorium, decontamination of uranium, separation of uranium and thorium, reextraction of uranium, concentration and purification, and recovery of Pa/sup 233/.
