FERMI ACCELERATION OF ELECTRONS IN THE OUTER VAN ALLEN BELT

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
It can be shown that a large solar storm cloud should wipe out any radiation in the outer Van Allen belt. In order therefore to account for the Presence of this intense radiation it has been suggested that it is originally trapped in the cloud and deposited in the earth's field during the geomagnetic storm. It is shown that this assumption is unnecessary since the radiation in the outer belt may be accounted for by a local Fermi acceleration created by the interaction between the storm and the geomagnetic field.
