The electrical conductivity of the oxides Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/, Y/sub 2/O / sub 3/ La/sub 2/O/sub 3/, Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/, Sm/sub 2/O/sub 3/, Gd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ , Dy/s ub 2/O/sub 3/, Yb/sub 2/O/sub 3/, ZrO/sub 2/, CeO/sub 2/, Pr/sub 6/O/sub 11/, Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/, and TaO/sub 2/ was measured in air and va cuum at various voltages and temperatures. The detection of oxygen, which should be released at the anode in ionic conductivity, was investigated. Polarization effects which should occur in material alteration of the oxides was also considered. All the results indicated an electronic conductivity in the temperature range from 873 to 1573 deg absolute. Some studies on the thermal reduction of Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and TaO/sub 2/ and the reduction of rare earth oxides with atomic hydrogen are also presented. (J.S.R.)
