Factors controlling the ligation of Gd(III) and Y(III) by macrocyclic poly(aminocarboxylates) were studied. Protonation of the ligands, stability constants for complexation of Gd(III) and Y(III), and affinity of the ligands for Na{sup +} were determined potentiometrically and by spectrophotometry. Stability constants followed the series DOTA > HP-DO3A > DTPA > DO3A > EDTA. Crystal structures for the HP-DO3A complexes are reported.
