THE $gamma$ SPECTRUM OF RaC' (Po$sup 214$) (in German)

A scintillation pair spectrometer, which is used for the spectroscopy of gamma radiation over 1.1 Mev, and which has a grey wedge analyzer and energy discrim-nation in the lateral branch, is described. The gamma transition of Po/ sup 214/ was investigated with this apparatus and the single lines were measured with respect to energy and intensity (Rn source). For evaluation of the grey wedge spectra a sensitive photometric method was used. Gamma lines with E/sub gamma / > 1150 kev, reported previously, were confirmed by the measurements. In addition a number of new very weak high energy gamma transitions were found. Altogether 40 lines over 1 Mev were observed. The conversion electron spectrum of Po/sup 214/ was analyzed on the basis of the measured gamma radiation. An energy level diagram is given in which all known gamma rays are arranged. The spin and parity of individual levels were discussed. Some levels were interpreted as collective vibration states, that is, as single phonon and two phonon excitation of a quadrupole oscillation.
