RADIAL OSCILLATIONS OF CYLINDRICAL PLASMA CONFINED BY AXIAL MAGNETIC FIELDS

Radial oscillations of a cylindrical plasma, confined by an axial magnetic field have recently been observed These oscillations are discussed on the basis of the magnetohydrodynamic equations. The effect of the proximity of a conducting wall and of differing mass distributions within the plasma are considered. It is found that the frequency is insensitive to these factors and depends only on the mass of plasma and the confining magnetic field. These oscillations should therefore provide a useful measure of the mass of gas swept up in a tast pinch device. (auth)
