RADIOACTIVE FALLOUT. Annual Progress Report
The present study was undertaken with the following objectives in mind: (a) to see if a rise in deposition of radioacttive debris occurred during the spring months of 1959; (b) to study the inter-relationships between the isotope ratios (Ba/sup 140/ Sr/sup 89/, Ba/sup 140//Sr/sup 90/, and Sr/sup 89/Sr/sup 90/ ) in rain and various meteorohogical factors, such as the rates of transfer of these radioactive nuclides from the stratosphere to the troposphere, the general circulation or global movement of air masses, as well as the stratospheric inventories of various radioactive nuclides. It is concluded that the spring peak of 1959 was primarily due to an increase in the rate of material transfer from the stratosphere to the troposphere, caused by the sinking of a very cold air mass which formed above the winter pole during the late winter months. The increase of the Sr/sup 90/ inventory in the northern stratosphere due to the fall 1958 test series was estimated to be 160%. (W.D.M.)
