CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURE OF LEAD, STRONTIUM AND BARIUM METATANTALATES (in Russian)

X-ray studies were made of the polycrystalline structure of lead, barium, and strontium metatantalates. The correlation of powder diagrams of PbTa/ sub 2/O/sub 6/. BaTa /sub 2/O/sub 6/, and SrTa/sub 2/O/sub 6/ with PbNb/sub 2/O/ sub 6/ indicate an isostructure. The enlargement of PbTa/sub 2/O/sub 6/ and BaTa/ sub 2/O/sub 6/ elementary cells is caused by the Pb/sup 2+/(1.26A) and Ba/sup 2+/ (1.38A) ion radii. The absence of spontaneous SrTa/sub 2/O/sub 6/ and BaTa/sub 2/ O O/sub 6/ polarization can be explained by the low polarizability of Sr/sup 2+/ ( alpha = 1.42) and Ba/sup 2+/( alpha = 1.69) with respect to Pb/sup 2+/ ( alpha = 4.32).
