THE CO-PRECIPITATION OF PROTACTINIUM WITH THE DIOXIDES OF MANGANESE, LEAD, AND TIN

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.
The scavenging of Pa/sup 233/ from thorium-nitric acid solutions was studied with a variety of adsorbents and as a function of pertinent solution variables. Co-formed MnO/sub 2/, PbO/sub 2/, and SnC/sub 2/ were particularly effective. High concentrations of thorium or nitric acid and high radiation levels were detrimental. Fluoride, phosphate, and zirconium ions also interfered with protactinium precipitation. These results implied the formation of 1: 1 protactinium- fluoride and protactinium-phosphate complexes which were about 60 and 10/sup 3/ times more stable than the corresponding thorium complexes.
