Title: Magnetic susceptibility measurements on actinide--Be$sub 13$ intermetallic compounds

Conference · · AIP (Am. Inst. Phys.) Conf. Proc., no. 24, pp. 353-354

Magnetic susceptibilities were measured between 2 and 300$sup 0$K for the compounds AnBe$sub 13$ (An = Th, U, Np, Pu), all of which form the NaZn$sub 13$ structure. The susceptibility of ThBe$sub 13$ is temperature-independent. The data for UBe$sub 13$ and NpBe$sub 13$ may follow two Curie--Weiss regions with the breaks occurring at 200 and 70$sup 0$K respectively. The Curie--Weiss parameters are not substantially different for the two regimes, p/sub eff/ = 3.16 and 2.99 $mu$/sub B/ for UBe$sub 13$, and p/sub eff/ = 2.35 and 2.76 $mu$/sub B/ for NpBe$sub 13$. For PuBe$sub 13$, the Curie--Weiss fit requires a temperature independent term and yields chi$sub 0$ = 1.20 x 10$sup -6$ emu/g, P/sub eff/ = 0.74 $mu$/sub B//Pu, and theta = +11$sup 0$K. The intermediate coupling scheme yields 5f$sup 3$, 5f$sup 4$, 5f$sup 5$ configurations for the U, Np, and Pu compounds, respectively. Thus, each actinide ion is trivalent if the f-electrons are considered to be localized. Of these compounds, only PuBe$sub 13$ gives evidence for long-range magnetic order, becoming antiferromagnetic at T/sub N/ = 11.5$sup 0$K. (auth)
