RESONANT ABSORPTION OF THE GAMMA RADIATION FROM THE Ne$sup 22$(p,$gamma$)Na$sup 23$ REACTION

The gamma rays emitted in the reaction Ne/sup 22/(p, gamma )Na/sup 23/ at E/sub p/ = 637 kev were selectively absorbed in sodium fluoride, using the technique of collision produced Doppler shift. Resonant absorption of the 9.40 Mev gamma rays occurs at 74.3 deg with respect to the proton beam direction. The instrumental resolution curve was determined by observirg the resonant absorption of the 12.33 Mev gamma radiation from the reaction Al/sup 27/(p, gamma )S/sup 28/ at E/sub p/ = 771 kev. The absorption curve for Nan is broader than the measured instrumental curve and therefore it was possible to determine directly the total width of the resonance level as 460 plus or minus 360 ev. From the absorption integral, together with this value of the total width, the radiation width ( GAMMA /sub gamma 0/) for transitions to the ground state is found to be 2.7 plus or minus 1.1 ev. This result is in agreement with the value GAMMA /sub gamma 0/ = 2.0 plus or minus 0.5 ev, found from a yield measurement. No definite assignment of parity can be made on the basis of the partial widths obtained. (auth)
