THE DECAY ENERGY OF THE FISSION PRODUCTS OF U$sup 23$$sup 5$

The information on the average power emitted as gamma or beta radiation from the fission products formed in thermal fission of U/sup 235/, as functions of the time after fission is reviewed. Data and calculations are taken from the sources considered to be best at the present time, and some new calculations were made. The total delayed gamma energy is estimated to be 7.0 plus or minus 1 Mev/fission Graphs of the functions and their integrals are presented in the report by MacBean. A revised estimate of the average total disintegration energy of all fission products has been based on the recent semi-empirical estimates by Hay and Newton of the fission-fragment masses. The result, which is 21.15 plus or minus 0.35 Mev/fission, is surprisingly close to the much earlier estimate by Way and Wigner. (auth)
