A photon initiated high energy electron-photon cascade was investigated. The energy of the primary photon was determined from the longitudinal development and the lateral distribution of the cascade to be about 2.10/sup 12/ev. The energy spectrum of electron pairs generated on the first 1.5 cascade units was measured. The spectrum obtained does not deviate significantly from either the spectrum calculated by the Bethe-Heitler theory or from that calculated by Migdal extending the Landau-PomeranchukTer-Mikaelyan theory.
