THE PRODUCTION OF HYPERFRAGMENTS AND Li$sup 8$ FRAGMENTS FROM STARS PRODUCED BY 4.5 BEV $pi$-MESONS

Work on hyperfragment and unstable fragment production in nuclear emulsion by 4.5-Bev pi /sup -/ mesons is reported. The hypenfragments and Li/ sup 8/ fragments were found by following each grey or black prong of each star until it left the pellicle in which the star was found. In examining some 25,000 stars, 150 Li/sup 8/ hammer tracks were found, and 50 events which at first sight were interpreted as hyperfragments. (W.D.M.)
