SYNTHESIS OF SEMI-INORGANIC FLUORINE POLYMERS. Quarterly Progress Report No. 5 for September 1, 1959 through November 30, 1959

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4190593

Perfluoroalkyl imidines, R/sub F/C(:NH)N = C(NH/sub 2/)R/sub F/, previously postulated as intermediates in the deammoniation reaction of perfluoroalkyl amidines, have been synthesized and identified. These compounds form stable, waterinsoluble chelates with Cu(II) and Zn ions. Perfluoroglutarodinitrile in excess reacts with perfluorobutyramidine at comparatively low temperatures to form an apparently polymeric product, probably through the intermediate formation of the imidine linkage. Attempts have been made to cotrimerize perfluoroalkylnitriles with cyanogen bromide and with cyanogen. No trimer containing perfluoroalkyl groups was obtained under the conditions used.
