THE CORROSION RESISTANCE OF Zr-Nb AND Zr-Nb-Sn ALLOYS IN HIGH-TEMPERATURE WATER AND STEAM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4189598
An alloy of reactor-grade sponge zirconium--2.5 wt.% niobium was exposed to water and steam at high temperature. The corrosion was twice that of Zircaloy- 2 while hydrogen pickup was found to be equal to that of Zircaloy-2. Ternary additions of tin to this alloy in the range 0.5 to 1.5 had no effect on the corrosion resistance in water at 315 deg C up tp 100 days. At higher temperatures, tin increased the corrosion, the effect varying with temperature. Heat treatment of the alloys was shown to affect corrosion resistance. (auth)
