U ENRICHMENT CAN BE CHECKED BY GAMM-RAY SPECTROMETRY

Journal Article · · Nucleonics (U.S.) Ceased publication
OSTI ID:4189557

The gamma spectrum of a uranium sample on an oscilloscope screen provides a fast, visual means of determining whether the sample is natural or enriched. Typical experimental curves are plotted for the garama spectra of U/ sup 235/ and natural uranium, from which it is easy to distinguish the difference in the samples. Two intense U/sup 235/ peaks appear at 92 and 184 kev, and a third peak of lesser intensity at 143 kev. The one distinct photopeak (90 kev) associated with the natural uranium spectrum is due to Th/sup 234/ and U/sup 235/ (B.O.G.)
