THE ISOTOPE EFFECT IN THE FIXATION OF NITROGEN BY AZOTOBACTER

The relative rates of fixation of N/sup 14/N/sup 14 and N/sup 15/N/sup 14/ by Azotobacter were studied. The ratio of these rates is 1.000 plus or minus 0.001. The isotope effect in a heterogeneous reaction, the catalytic hydrogenation of the double bond in azobenzene, was studied. No isotope effect was found. The rate-determining step in the mechanism of these reactions does not involve a change in bcnding to nitrogen. The geochemical implications are discussed. (auth)
