STUDIES OF REACTOR CONTAINMENT. Monthly Technical Progress Report No. 32 covering Period: December 1, 1959 through December 31, 1959
A summary of activity during the period is presented. A systematic series of tests was completed on shock crushing of reactor shield materials such as celotex, redwood, pine, balsa, foamglass, and a foamed plastic material. Investigations of explosive decompression of water resulting from pressure vessel ruputure were continued. The shock tube system was successfully proof tested under long-time internal hydraulic pressure up to 1100 psi. A series of diaphragm rupture tests are described in which "petalling" was found to occur with a soft aluminum material sample. Soft copper diaphragm tests are also reported. Progress in other task areas walls limited to report preparation. (For preceding period see AECU-4600.) (J.R.D.)
