Alternating current losses in superconducting conductors for low-field applications

Journal Article · · Adv. Cryog. Eng., v. 19, pp. 171-180
OSTI ID:4186953
A study has been made of ac loss characteristics of type-II superconductors due to hysteresis losses in the superconducting material and eddy current losses in the normal matrix in the absence of an applied field. Losses were measured for Nb$sub 3$Sn tapes, a Nb multifilament conductor, and NbTi multifilament and single-core conductors at 60 Hz and 4.2 K. The feasibility of using these materials in power transmission lines is considered. (SDF)
