Title: PRELIMINARY SAFEGUARDS REPORT FOR THE PIQUA ORGANIC MODERATED REACTOR (REVISED). SUPPLEMENT I TO THE PRELIMINARY SAFEGUARDS REPORT FOR THE PIQUA ORGANIC MODERATED REACTOR (REVISED)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4182273

The plant will operate at power levels up to 45.5 thermal megawatts and is designed to deliver steam to the existing turbine-generator facilities of the Piqua Municipal Power Station. All accidents were analyzed which were considered pertinent to the safety of the plant and to those outside of the controlled area surrounding the site. Only one type of credible incident studied resulted in melting of a portion of the reactor core. This incident assumes an uncontrolled and continuous withdrawal of the reactor control rods during startup of the reactor. Other types of incidents examined cause temperature, power, or pressure transients in the reactor but do not result in melting of the fuel. Incidents involving release of fission products to the envirorunent were also analyzed. Containment of radioactive fission products in the plant is provided by three successive enclosures. Supplement one answers several questions raised by the Reactor Hazards Evaluation Branch of the Atomic Energy Commission in regard to the Piqua Organic Moderated Reactor. (W.L.H.)
