A paracentric inversion on chromosome 3 of the house fly, Musca domestica L., was employed as a genetic tool along with mutant markers to recover viable 3-5 translocation homozygotes in this species. The inversion was included directly within the translocations obtained to determine its potential with regard to permanently linking conditional lethal mutations to translocated third chromosomes for use in population replacement control programs: The recombination tests with female translocation heterozygotes indicated the feasibility of utilizing the inversion for such a purpose. The data on recombination involving one of the translocations indicated that the chromosome 5 marker, ocra, lies in the longer of the two arms of the chromosome. (auth)
