MONTHLY TECHNICAL PROGRESS REPORT FOR AUGUST 1956

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4180937
Hot-pressing and rolling techniques are being developed for the fabrication of porous fuel elements for hightemperature long burnup applications. Special methods of canning Th targets have been studied. Properties, hydriding conditions, and cladding of hydrides for use as potential moderators are being studied. The effect of diffusion of lattice imperfections upon the dimensional instability of alpha -U is being studied. An attempt was made to prepare samples of Ni/sub 2/Al/sub 3/ In bulk form for use in diffusion studies by compacting and sintering Ni and Al powders. Metallurgical methods are being developed for preparing U-rich alloys which have a fine grain structure and are resistant to dimensional changes. The development of stacked fuel elements, non- oxide dispersion materials for fuel elements, and a Zircaloy and stainless steel cladding for fuel elements are discussed. (W.L.H.)
