PHOTONEUTRONIC METHOD OF DETERMINING THE CONCENTRATION OF DEUTERIUM IN NATURAL WATER (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Doklady Akad. Nauk S.S.S.R.
OSTI ID:4180504
The deuterium concentration in water was determined with an order of accuracy of plus or minus 1% by correlating the corresponding gamma radiation source power with an effective neutron attenuation method. The analyzed water was irradiated by gamma quanta, and the neutron flux produced by D/sup 2/( gamma ,n)H/sup 1/ reactions was recorded. The threshold of the reaction is 2.22 Mev, and the cross section is 1.2 x 10/sup -27/ cm/sup 2/. Under ordinary conditions the number of neutrons emitted is proportional to the deuterium concentration. The comparison experiments used a Na/sup 24/ gamma source with Be emitting the neutrons. The cross sections of ( gamma ,n) for D/sub 2/O and Be are almost identical. Descriptions are given of the installation and the procedures. (R.V.J.)
