Title: Calorimetric evidence for spin fluctuations in UAl$sub 2$

Conference · · AIP (Am. Inst. Phys.) Conf. Proc., no. 24, pp. 220-222

Results are presented of heat capacity measurements on UAl$sub 2$ between 1.8 and 400$sup 0$K. The data are compared with recent resistivity and susceptibility measurements which indicate the existence of localized spin fluctuations in a narrow 5f band. Below about 50$sup 0$K, the electronic contribution to the heat capacity becomes large, equivalent to $gamma$ approximately 70 mJ/mole-K$sup 2$. Below 6K, there is an upturn in C/T which is proportional to T$sup 2$ log (T/T/sub SF/), where T/sub SF/ = 10.6$sup 0$K is identified as the spin fluctuation temperature. Extrapolation of this term to zero temperature yields m*/m approximately 2 for the spin-fluctuation mass enhancement. At 300$sup 0$K, UAl$sub 2$ exhibits more typical metallic behavior, with $gamma$ approximately 15 mJ/mole-K$sup 2$. Data are also presented for nonmagnetic URh$sub 3$; at low temperatures C = $gamma$T + $beta$ T$sup 3$, with $gamma$ = 14.5 mJ/mole-K$sup 2$ and $beta$ corresponding to theta/sub D/ = 336$sup 0$K.
