Ring lens for producing uniform density ion beams

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4178608
Frequently one needs to irradiate a circular target uniformly with a positive ion beam from an accelerator. The typical beam is peaked on the axis and has a more or less Gaussian radial distribution, so that it would be advantageous to be able to fold the tails of the Gaussian inward to give a uniform flux on the target. A lens, which is quite unconventional, was designed and built for that purpose and has operated successfully for many months on the 5 MV electrostatic accelerator at this laboratory. The general concepts and lens structure are presented here. (auth)
