In the recent past, extensive studies on tribological behavior of discontinuously reinforced aluminium matrix composites has been carried out, owing to their better properties over conventionally used unreinforced alloys. In most of the studies, the counterface material used is steel, in its various compositions and conditions. The steel can influence the tribological properties by forming oxides of iron, debris and transfer layers. The present paper reports the effect of formation of Fe rich layer on the composite pin surface, on the resultant friction and wear behavior of A356 Al-30wt% SiC{sub p} composite under the dry sliding condition against steel.
