Effect of silicon addition on the composition and structure of fine-scale precipitates in Al-Mg-Si alloys

Al-Mg-Si alloys possess good mechanical properties, based on their age hardening after solution treatment. In these alloys, it is important to select proper silicon and magnesium contents and proper aging conditions in order to control a distribution of the precipitates. For the base composition of alloys, an excess of silicon in the pseudo binary Al-Mg{sub 2}Si system is known to enhance the density of precipitates. Therefore, excess Si containing Al-Mg{sub 2}Si alloy has already been widely used as structural materials because of its superior mechanical properties. To make sure the role of Si excess on the aging behavior, it is essential to clarify the structural and also compositional changes of precipitates in aging. The purpose of this work is to clarify the chemical composition and the structure of early-stage precipitates, {beta}{double_prime} and {beta}{prime}, in both Al-Mg{sub 2}Si alloy and excess Si containing Al-Mg{sub 2}Si alloy.
