{Sigma}5 (210)/[001] symmetric tilt grain boundary in yttrium aluminum garnet
- Lawrence Livermore National Lab., CA (United States)
The {Sigma}5 (210)/[001] symmetric tilt grain boundary in yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) was produced by diffusion bonding precisely oriented single crystals. The crystals were cleaned and bonded in an ultra-high-vacuum environment. The atomic structure of the boundary was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Model atomic structures were created by geometric construction to form the coincident site lattice model boundary. Comparison of model structures with high-resolution micrographs was performed by high-resolution image simulation. Many aspects of the boundary structure were properly represented by the models, but some details of the high-resolution images indicated that differences existed.
