In response to growing concerns about the impact of the building industry on the global environment, AIA formed the Committee on The Environment (COTE) in 1990 to increase awareness of the relationship between the designer and the built environment. As one of the fastest growing AIA professional interest areas, the AIA COTE now has 62 state and local components, and about 1,600 members. The mission of the AIA Committee on the Environment is to create sustainable buildings and communities by advancing, disseminating and advocating environmental knowledge and values to the profession, industry and public.
