QUARTERLY TECHNICAL PROGRESS REPORT FOR PERIOD ENDING MARCH 31, 1960

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4177018· OSTI ID:4177018
Research was continued on the fabrication of low-cost, high-quality ceramic, rcd-type fuel elements. Hot isostatic pressing techniques are used in this fabrication process. Work was continued to improve the thermal conductivity of UO/sub 2/ pellets by the addition of smill amounts of other oxides. Determinations were made of the behavior of stainless steel-clad, isostatically pressed UO/sub 2/ samples relative to standard pellitized UO/sub 2/, under prolonged neutron irradiation. Characteristics and dimensional stability of two uranium--yttrium alloys were determined for neutron irradiation at high temperatures. (For preceding period see SCNC-306.) (B.O.G.)
