Journal Article · · Air Univ. Quart. Rev.
OSTI ID:4176154
A review of nuclear propulsion programs, including manned aircraft, and nuclear missile, rocket, and auxiliary power programs is given. The principles of nuclear propulsion are discussed relative to power-reactor fundamentals, thrust and power production from nuclear energy, heat transfer and cooling systems, reactor materials, and the shield. The development status of the direct- and indirect-cycle nuclear propulsion programs, the programs developing reactors for ramjets and as auxiliary power sources, and the radiation effects on aircraft systems are reviewed. The radiobiological and human factors of nuclear- powered aircraft are discussed. (round maintenance and support of nuclear aircraft are discussed. The public hazards of nuclear aircraft are discussed. (C.J.G.)
