THE OXIDATION OF IRRADIATED POLYETHYLENE. II. THERMAL OXIDATION

Journal Article · · Intern. J. Appl. Radiation and Isotopes
The oxidative changes which take place in irradiated polyethylene on exposure to air or oxygen at elevated temperatures were followed by infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometry, by weight loss and oxygen absorption measurements and by estimation of the hydroperoxides produced. While the data presented are insufficient to enable a mechanism for the oxidation process to be proposed it is found that the radiation induced changes in the constitution of the polymer exert a significant effect on the subsequent rate of thermal oxidation.
