PRODUCTION OF URANIUM DIOXIDE MASSES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4174580

Uranium dioxide masses of a high apparent density (9.5 g/cm/sup 3/ or more) are obtained by cold compacting nonstoichiometric uranium dioxide having an oxygen excess preferably UO/sub 2.09/- UO/sub 2.15/, at a pressure of up to 1400 kg/cm/sup 2/, then sintering in an inert atmosphere during 0.5 to 2 hr at 1200 to 1500 deg C, preferably 1400 deg C. The nonstoichiometric oxide is obtained by heating UO/sub 2/ for some minutes in air at 300 deg C, or preferably by reduction of U/sub 3/C/sub 8/ with H/sub 2/ at 650 deg C
