A ceramic fuel for boiling water reactors is reported consisting of UO/ sub 2/ + ThO/sub 2/, prepared by intimately mixing finely divided ThO/sub 2/ and U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ or UC/sub 3/, compacting to the d esired form, and sintering in air at 1450 to 2000 deg C. A preferred method is mixing 6.59% U/sub 3/ O/sub 8/ and 93.41% ThO/sub 2/ (particle size 0.044 mm), compacting under 980 kg/cm/sup 2/ and sintering at 1750 deg C.
