The embrittlement of iron and nickel by cathodically envolved hydrogen was studied using electrochemical and metallurgical methods simultaneously. The relation between the binding force of the hydride of a poisoning element (present in acid solution) and the ability to provoke deformation of an iron cathode are discussed The elongation and time to fracture of iron, carbon steel, and nickel were determined. Iron and carbon steel absorbed small quantities of hydrogen whereas nickel absorbed great quantities. (C.J.G.)
