The appearance of spots on the dischange ancde in mercury, inert gases, and hydrogen vapors was studied. The properties of the spot itself were investigated by intrcducing a prcbe into the spot. The regular pattenn of spcts in the annde results from the reverse action of each spot on the surrounding dischargge region. (R.V.J.)
