BASIC RESEARCH WITH HIGH ENERGY ELECTRONS AND X-RAYS PRODUCED BY A 300 MEV SYNCHROTRON. Annual Progress Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4172584
The operation, penformance, and modifications to the 300-Mev synchrotron are reportad. A 1-Mev injection system was installed. Measurements of the photoproduction cross sections were made for charged pions from C, H, and deuterium at k/sub 0/ values of 186 to 278 with the meson magnetic spectrometer. Excitation curves were measured for pi /sup -/ and pi /sup +/ photoproduction on C/sup 12/. The cross section for pi /sup +/ production from Al/sup 27/( gamma , pi /sup +/)Mg/sup 27/ and the a bsolute yield of Mg/sup 27/ were determined. A polarimeter to detect protons, measure their energy, and measure the spatial orientation of their spins was designed. (See also AECU3512.) (C.J.G.)
