Rocket observations were made of the ionosphere at White Sands, N. Mex., and Fort Churchill, Canada. High electron-density grndients were found in all ionospheric regions penetrated. In the D-region (below 90 km) a high gradient was:iimost always present near the top of the mesosphere. in the E-region (90 to 170 km) high gradients were associated with sporadic-E at various levels, and in the F-region (above l70 km) they appeared reiated to the distribution of spread-F. The experimental techniques and further explanations of the observations in the D- , E-, and F-regions are presented. (B.O.G.)
